Why does it hurt when you have a cavity ?
The acids in plaque damage the enamel covering your teeth. It also creates holes in the tooth called cavities. Cavities usually do not hurt, unless they grow very deep and affect nerves or cause a tooth fracture. An untreated cavity can lead to an infection in the tooth called a tooth abscess. This makes the tooth painful and one can experience pain and even swellling.
How Dental cavities are formed?
The bacteria present in the mouth slowly start rotting the food particles left behind. The white hard coating on the teeth, called enamel then begins to collapse in the presence of these acids . Soon a cavity or hole is formed . As the cavity becomes larger and deeper more bacteria accumulate producing more and more acid .
